Should You Enroll in a Distance Learning Program?
JE Cornett
You know that the better educated you are, the better your chances at landing a job that pays well and offers opportunities to grow. However, if going back to school full-time, on-campus is not an option for you, you may be considering enrolling in a distance learning program.
If you're new to the idea of getting a degree or certification through via distance learning, you likely have no idea what to expect from these programs. Knowing the ropes before you make the leap into a distance learning program can help you decide whether these programs are right for you.
First and foremost, it's important to understand that most distance education programs rely heavily on internet-based applications for attending classes remotely, communicating with your instructor and fellow students, and submitting your coursework. Instructors take it for granted that you are familiar with using email, web-based classroom software, word processing programs, and other computer software and hardware. If your computer skills need some work, get help before you enroll in classes - else you're behind before you even start.
Don't assume that distance learning programs are easy; most of these programs are just as demanding as their on-site counterparts. You'll do lots of reading, and plenty of assignments that let your instructor know you're keeping on task. Getting a degree or certification online demands excellent time management skills. Between attending classes virtually, completing assignments and taking tests - often online - you'll have lots of deadlines to remember. You're often expected to "take part" in class discussions by reading and commenting on other students' assignments or messages, too, which adds even more time to your assignments. If you have trouble keeping appointments or finishing tasks, work on your time management skills before you enroll in distance learning opportunities.
A distance learning program is an excellent way to get the degree or certification you need to succeed, but don't enroll without considering the dedication completing your education will take. Make sure you understand the skills and hours that distance learning demands before you start your first course in order to get off on the right track!
