Electronic Learning
Electronic learning is the terminology used for a methodology of learning to use multimedia, eLearning software programs and the Internet. This allows students to study courses or earn diploma degrees through long distance studies. It is hugely popular today because it provides flexibility for those who are working students, have disabilities and those who want study outside of traditional classrooms.
Distance learning is not new. Isaac Pittman offered shorthand and stenography classes to secretarial students via snail mail in 1840s. Illinois Wesleyan University was the first to offer a correspondence bachelor’s degree in year 1874. Four decades later the government established the National University Extension Association; to perform accreditation for distance learning programs.
The invention of radio and television changed the methodologies used for distant learning; the use of teleconferencing, audio and videos tapes started.
Electronic learning the name suggests refers to the use of the Internet, electronic learning software and interactive media. E-learning falls under distance learning because students independently learn lessons and accomplish assignments outside the traditional classroom setting. E-learning is advantageous because students learn at their own pace; they earn degrees and continue to study even if they are just home-based, travelling and working. Students are not required to show-up for classes and it saves them time other expenses related to studying the traditional way.
Electronic learning is particularly useful for corporations and offices who wish to provide continuing education to employees. Students in rural areas can take up postgraduate studies though universities that provide distance learning programs. The government also trains under-served rural population using electronic learning.
It is said that electronic learning will become extremely popular for the next five years. It will grow to become a multi-billion dollar industry. Institutions of higher education today are leaning towards making substantial investments in eLearning software and technology.
