Basics of Educational Software
Writing is my Passion
When most people think of the software that is used on computers, they think of the Internet or of Microsoft Office, which is more commonly known as productivity software. However, the use of technology has grown and become an important part of our daily and has more recently grown to the educational market. Software that is used for the primary purpose of teaching or self-learning is known as educational software.
This software found its beginnings in the home market in the 1990s, geared primarily for use by younger children. The advent of new technology has led this software to be used in a greater number of areas that include school curricula, educational games, classroom room aids and reference material. Teachers are encouraged by administration to implement software as an integral tool into their teaching methods.
One type of software used for education is that of courseware. This typically consists of material for either lesson or an entire course and can include lesson plans, tests and other activities that students can use in order to learn the material for a class. Lesson plans may be available to teachers in a static format such as HTML pages or PDF files while the more dynamic material for the students can be applets or games that reinforce and help students better grasp the concepts being taught in class.
Another type of educational software is that serves works in conjunction with computer and other hardware is an interactive whiteboard. The whiteboard is typically mounted on the front wall of the classroom and works in conjunction with a computer and projector. The teacher can interact with the whiteboard by using a stylus, pen or even the fingers. The interactive whiteboard has become very popular as a teaching tool as it can be used to display and demonstrate the use of software, create interactive tests and quizzes, or annotate a presentation and capture and save the notes for future reference.
Educational software is an excellent supplemental tool for teaching and will mostly likely become more widely used as technology advances.
